Dating apps
Dating app development with matching, safety and moderation built in
Our dating app development work covers swipe-style apps, niche and community dating products, matchmaking services and friendship apps for founders and operators who want more than a cloned template. We build the iOS and Android apps, the matching and messaging backend, and the moderation console your trust and safety team uses every day.
Dating is one of the categories where safety decides whether the app ships at all. Apple requires filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details for apps with user-generated content, and users leave apps that feel unsafe faster than apps that feel dull. We design those features first, not as a pre-launch patch.
- Report, block and filter from day one
- Photo and identity verification options
- Moderation console with audit trail
- Code and store accounts owned by you
Who this is for
We build for three main groups. Founders launching a niche dating app for a community, faith, profession, age group or city where the big apps feel generic. Matchmaking businesses moving clients from spreadsheets and WhatsApp into a branded app. Existing dating products that need a rebuild, better safety tooling or a new matching model.
Niche is where new dating apps win. A generic swipe app competes with the largest consumer brands on marketing spend, and Apple’s Guideline 4.3(b) rejects apps indistinguishable from what is already widely available, which catches many template clones. We push for a clear point of difference in discovery. For the sector view, including moderation and user-generated content rules, see social networking app development, and the wider app solutions by type list.

Decide before design
- Who is the community, and why are they underserved?
- Swipe, curated daily matches, or matchmaker-led?
- Verification level at sign-up
- Launch city or country (density matters)

Advanced features that drive cost
- Smarter matching. Moving from distance and filters to ranking based on behaviour needs event tracking, a feature store and careful testing so the system does not quietly favour a small share of profiles.
- Video and voice calls. In-app calling through a real-time video SDK lets people meet before sharing numbers. Adds call moderation and reporting paths.
- ID verification. Government-ID checks through a verification vendor add cost per check and sensitive data handling, beyond a simple selfie match.
- AI-assisted moderation. Image and text classifiers that pre-screen photos and messages before a human sees them. Apple Guideline 5.1.2(i) requires disclosure and explicit permission when personal data is shared with third-party AI. See our AI app development service.
- Events and groups. Speed-dating events, ticketing and group chats, which add physical-world payments and more moderation surface.
- Multiple languages and regions. Translated prompts, region-specific safety copy and right-to-left support for Arabic.

Recommended stack for dating app development
For most dating app development we recommend a cross-platform build with Flutter app development or React Native. Card stacks, profiles and chat are the same on both platforms, and a single codebase makes it cheaper to ship safety fixes to everyone at once. Native is worth it only if real-time video or heavy camera work is central.
The backend carries the real load. Discovery queries combine location, age, preferences, blocks and previous swipes, so we use PostgreSQL with PostGIS or a search engine, with a cache for candidate lists. Chat runs on WebSockets or a managed chat service. Node.js suits the realtime parts well. Firebase can carry an MVP’s auth and chat, though discovery queries usually outgrow Firestore. Our mobile app backend development team owns this layer.
Integrations dating apps depend on
Verification and moderation vendors
Selfie and liveness checks, optional ID verification, and image and text classifiers for nudity, violence and scam patterns. Vendor choice depends on markets and cost per check.
Chat and calling
A managed chat SDK or our own WebSocket service, plus a video SDK for in-app calls. We keep message storage in your cloud account where possible.
Store subscriptions
StoreKit and Google Play Billing for premium tiers, boosts and consumables, with server-side receipt validation so entitlements cannot be faked.
Maps, push and analytics
Coarse location for distance, Firebase Cloud Messaging for match and message alerts, and analytics for funnels from sign-up to first conversation.
Safety rules from Apple Guideline 1.2 and beyond
General information, not legal advice. These are the rules most often behind dating app rejections and safety failures.
Apple Guideline 1.2 (user-generated content). Apps with UGC, explicitly including dating, must have a filter for objectionable material, a way to report offensive content with timely responses, the ability to block abusive users, and published contact information, per Apple App Review Guidelines. In our builds, report and block are reachable from every profile and chat in two taps, and reports land in a console with response-time tracking.
Age restriction. Dating apps are for adults. We enforce an age gate at sign-up, set the store age rating accordingly and give moderators tools to remove suspected minors quickly. Under Apple Guideline 1.2.1(a), creator-content apps must use age restriction based on verified or declared age.
Account deletion. Apple Guideline 5.1.1(v) requires in-app account deletion. For dating, that also means removing photos, ending matches and handling retained safety records under your policy.
Sensitive data. Dating profiles hold very personal details. Under EU GDPR, the higher fine tier of up to €20M or 4% of worldwide turnover covers breaches of consent rules and Article 9 special-category data; ask your lawyer which of your profile fields qualify. We minimise what is collected, make sensitive fields optional and keep them out of analytics SDKs.
Payments. Premium features are digital, so they use Apple in-app purchase and Google Play billing. US rules on external payment links are changing; we design to the current rules at build time.
Safety baseline in every build
- Report and block on every profile and chat
- Photo review before profiles go live
- Keyword and image filters
- Published support contact in the app
- Moderator audit trail and ban appeals
- Coarse location only, never exact
Typical effort estimate (hours) by version
Typical effort estimates (hours), not quotes, for one Flutter app, a managed backend for auth, chat and storage, trust and safety tooling, a moderation console, QA and project management. Rows are cumulative. Fixed prices follow discovery.
| Version | Typical scope | Typical effort estimate (hours) | At the $25–$49/hr market band |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP (one market, one audience) | Sign-up, profiles, discovery and matching, chat, report, block and filter, age gate, one premium subscription, moderation console | 1,460 to 2,170 | $36,500 to $106,330 |
| v1 (retention) | Selfie or photo verification, voice notes and video calls, richer profiles and prompts, boosts and consumables, smarter ranking, multi-language | 2,500 to 3,800 | $62,500 to $186,200 |
| Scale (multi-market) | Multiple regions and data rules, ML-assisted moderation, trust scoring, events or groups, experimentation, load testing | 4,000 to 6,500+ | $100,000 to $318,500+ |
Dollar figures multiply the hours by the $25–$49/hr band most firms list on the Clutch Pakistan app developer directory. That is market data for illustration, not our pricing. Verification and moderation vendors charge per check on top. For a detailed breakdown, read our dating app cost guide.
How dating apps make money
Subscriptions
Tiers that add unlimited likes, filters, seeing who liked you and incognito modes. Most revenue comes from here.
Consumables
Boosts, super likes and spotlight placements, bought one at a time through store billing.
Matchmaker and concierge fees
Human-led services priced per package; the app supports the matchmaker rather than replacing them.
Events
Ticketed in-person events are physical services and use a payment provider, not store billing.
How we build your dating app
NDA and discovery (1–2 weeks)
Workshops on community, matching model, verification level, safety policy and launch city. Output: flows, a clickable prototype, a moderation policy draft and a fixed price.
Safety and data model first
Report, block, filters, the moderation console and the discovery query are built in early sprints, because review and user trust depend on them.
Two-week sprints with demo builds
TestFlight and Play internal testing builds every sprint, with seeded test profiles so you can judge matching and chat with realistic data.
Soft launch and density building
Store submission from your accounts, then a single-city launch so members find enough matches. See our app store rejection reasons guide for what reviewers check.
Dating app development FAQs
What safety features does Apple require for a dating app?
Apple Guideline 1.2 requires apps with user-generated content, including dating apps, to filter objectionable material, let users report offensive content with timely responses, let users block abusive users, and publish contact information. Apps that lack these are rejected. We also add photo review, age gating and a moderation console, because the minimum rarely keeps a community safe.
Can I launch a Tinder-style clone quickly?
You can build swipe mechanics quickly, but a near-copy is risky. Apple Guideline 4.3(b) rejects apps indistinguishable from what is already widely available, and generic swipe apps struggle to attract users against the largest brands. A clear niche, a different matching model or stronger safety features gives you a reason to exist in the store.
How do you verify users are real?
The common baseline is a selfie or liveness check matched against profile photos, which earns a verified badge. Some apps add phone verification and optional government-ID checks through a verification vendor, priced per check. We design verification as a progressive step so sign-up stays fast, and route failed checks to human review.
How much does it cost to build a dating app?
It depends on matching, verification, moderation and chat scope. As a typical effort estimate, an MVP with safety tools and a moderation console runs about 1,460 to 2,170 hours. At the $25–$49 per hour band most firms list on Clutch’s Pakistan directory, that is roughly $36,500 to $106,330. Our dating app development cost guide breaks it down by feature.
Do premium features have to use in-app purchase?
Yes, for digital features sold inside the app, such as subscriptions, boosts and super likes. Apple requires in-app purchase and Google requires Play billing for digital goods. Ticketed in-person events are physical services and use a payment provider instead. US rules on external payment links are changing, so we design to the current rules at build time.
How do you handle moderation at scale?
We combine automated filters for photos and messages with a human review console. Reports are prioritised by severity, moderators see user history and previous actions, and every decision is logged with an appeal path. As volume grows, AI pre-screening reduces manual work, with disclosure and consent where personal data goes to a third-party AI service.
