Fitness apps
Fitness app development for workouts, wearables and subscriptions
Our fitness app development work covers workout and training apps, coaching platforms, gym and studio apps, and habit and wellness trackers for fitness brands, personal trainers, gym chains and health startups. We build the member app, the coach or trainer tools, the content and billing backend, and the connections to Apple Health, Health Connect and wearables.
Retention decides whether a fitness app pays back, so the product decisions matter as much as the code: a fast first workout, accurate progress tracking, and reminders that help rather than nag. We also design for the health-data rules that apply even when your app is not a medical product.
- HealthKit and Health Connect integration
- Subscriptions built to store rules
- Health-data handling planned from day one
- Your code, your store accounts
Who this is for
We typically build for four kinds of fitness businesses. Trainers and creators turning a following into a paid programme app. Gyms and studios that want booking, memberships and class schedules in their own app. Fitness and wellness startups building a new consumer product. Corporate wellness providers running challenges for employers.
The right product shape differs a lot. A creator app is a content and subscription business. A gym app is a booking and access-control system. A tracking startup is a data product that lives on wearable integrations. We cover those choices in discovery so the first release proves the thing that matters. For the sector view (gyms, studios, wellness brands and their data rules), see our wellness app development page.
If your app will diagnose or treat a condition, it moves into medical-device and healthcare territory. That is a different project, and our healthcare app development page is the better starting point.
Decide before design
- Content-led, coaching-led or tracking-led?
- Which wearables matter to your users?
- In-app subscription, gym membership, or both?
- Any users under 13?
The apps in a fitness product
Member app
Onboarding quiz, workout plans, video and timer-led sessions, logging, progress charts, challenges, reminders and subscriptions. iOS and Android, with an optional Apple Watch or Wear OS companion.
Coach and trainer tools
Programme builder, exercise library, client check-ins, messaging and progress review. Usually a web app, with a light mobile version for replies on the go.
Admin panel
Content management, plans and pricing, users, challenges, push campaigns and reports, built by our admin panel and dashboard development team.
Core features of a fitness app
| Area | Member app | Coach / admin |
|---|---|---|
| Onboarding | Goals, level, equipment, injuries; first workout within minutes | Rules that map answers to starting plans |
| Workouts | Video or animated exercises, timers, rest periods, audio cues | Exercise library, programme builder, scheduling |
| Logging | Sets, reps, weight, duration, notes; offline logging | Templates and default progressions |
| Health data | Read and write workouts, steps, heart rate via HealthKit and Health Connect | Aggregated, consented data views only |
| Progress | Charts, personal bests, body measurements, photos | Client progress review, check-in forms |
| Community | Challenges, leaderboards, optional feed | Moderation tools if users post content |
| Bookings (gyms) | Class schedule, booking, waitlist, check-in QR | Capacity, instructors, no-show rules |
| Billing | Free trial, subscription, restore purchases | Plans, offers, churn reports |
Advanced features that drive cost
- Watch apps. A watchOS or Wear OS companion for live workouts, heart rate and rep counting is its own app with its own testing matrix.
- Direct wearable and equipment integrations. Going beyond Apple Health and Health Connect to brand APIs or Bluetooth equipment such as bikes and heart-rate straps adds per-device work and long test cycles.
- Adaptive plans. Programmes that adjust from logged performance need sound training rules first; the code is the easy part.
- AI coaching and form feedback. On-device pose detection with Core ML or ML Kit keeps camera frames on the phone. LLM-generated plans need guardrails. See our AI app development service.
- Live and on-demand classes. Streaming, schedules and replays add a video platform and its per-minute costs.
- Social features. Feeds, comments and DMs bring Apple’s user-generated content rules: filtering, reporting, blocking and published contact details.

Recommended stack for fitness app development
For content- and coaching-led fitness app development we usually recommend Flutter app development: workout players, logs and charts are the same on both platforms, and plugins for HealthKit and Health Connect are mature. For tracking-led products with watch apps, background sensors or Bluetooth equipment, native is often the better call, using Swift on iOS and Kotlin on Android.
On the backend, Firebase is a fast start: Cloud Firestore’s offline support suits gym basements with no signal, and Firebase Authentication handles email, phone and social sign-in. Larger products with complex reporting move to PostgreSQL with Node.js. Exercise videos go on a video CDN with adaptive streaming, never on your API server.
Integrations: wearables, payments and notifications
Apple HealthKit
Read and write workouts, steps, heart rate, sleep and body measurements with per-type permission. Apple reviews health data use closely, so every data type needs a clear purpose in the app and the privacy labels.
Android Health Connect
Google’s on-device store for health and fitness data on Android, shared across apps with user permission. Wear OS and many brand apps write to it, which saves building separate integrations.
Subscriptions and memberships
StoreKit and Google Play Billing for in-app plans; a payment provider for gym memberships and class packs, which are physical services and must not use store billing.
Notifications, video and analytics
Firebase Cloud Messaging for reminders, a video platform for workouts and product analytics for activation and retention funnels.
Health data, the FTC rule and store billing
This is general information, not legal advice. Fitness apps often assume health-data law does not apply to them; in the US, that assumption is risky.
FTC Health Breach Notification Rule. The FTC’s rule covers health apps and connected devices that are not covered by HIPAA. According to the FTC, an app that collects health data and syncs with fitness trackers is likely covered. A “breach” includes unauthorised sharing, not just hacks, so sending health data to an ad or analytics SDK without authorisation can count. Individuals must be notified within 60 calendar days, the FTC too if 500 or more are affected, and civil penalties reach up to $53,088 per violation. The amended rule took effect on 29 July 2024 and explicitly covers health apps.
HIPAA. Most consumer fitness apps are not HIPAA covered entities. That changes if you work on behalf of a health plan or provider, which is a healthcare project.
UK and EU. Identifiable health data is special category data under UK GDPR, needing an Article 6 lawful basis plus an Article 9 condition; which condition fits is a decision for your data protection adviser.
Store billing. Digital plans and premium workouts use in-app purchase on iOS and Google Play billing on Android; current fees are on our in-app purchases and subscriptions for mobile apps page. Gym memberships are physical services and must not use either. US rules on external payment links are changing; we design to the current rules at build time.
What we build in
- Health data kept out of ad and analytics SDKs
- Per-type consent with plain-language reasons
- Data map for privacy labels
- Breach response contacts and logs
- In-app account and data deletion
Typical effort estimate (hours) by version
Typical effort estimates (hours) for design, cross-platform apps, backend, admin panel, QA and project management. Fixed prices follow discovery.
| Version | Typical scope | Typical effort estimate (hours) | At the $25–$49/hr market band |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP | Onboarding, workout plans and player, logging, progress, HealthKit/Health Connect, subscription, admin | 800–1,300 | $20,000–$63,700 |
| v1 | Coach tools, check-ins and messaging, challenges, offline mode, push campaigns, gym bookings | 1,500–2,300 | $37,500–$112,700 |
| Scale | Watch apps, Bluetooth equipment, adaptive plans, AI form feedback, live classes, community feed | 2,800–4,200+ | $70,000–$205,800+ |
Typical estimates, not a quote. Dollar figures multiply the hours by the $25–$49/hr band most firms list on the Clutch Pakistan app developer directory. That is market data for illustration, not our pricing. Video hosting and analytics are running costs. Our fitness app development cost guide breaks these hours down by content, wearables and subscriptions. Our guide to how much it costs to build an app explains how hours turn into a budget.
Monetisation models for fitness apps
Subscriptions with a free trial
The default for content and tracking apps. Trial length and paywall placement matter more than price.
Coaching tiers
Higher-priced plans with human check-ins. Coach time is the cost; tooling keeps it profitable.
Memberships and class packs
For gyms and studios, charged through a payment provider, not store billing.
Corporate wellness contracts
Employers pay per seat for challenges and reports. Needs team admin and aggregate-only reporting.
How we build your fitness app
NDA and discovery (1–2 weeks)
Workshops on users, training model, data sources and billing. Output: user flows, a clickable prototype, a data map for health permissions, and a fixed price.
First workout before everything else
We build onboarding and the workout player first, because time to first completed workout is the strongest early retention signal you can control.
Two-week sprints with demo builds
A TestFlight and Play internal testing build every sprint. Your trainers test real sessions in a real gym, which finds timer, audio and offline issues early.
QA, launch and retention work
Testing on real devices and wearables, store submission from your accounts, and post-launch iteration on onboarding and reminders. See our mobile app testing services.
Fitness app development FAQs
Does my fitness app need to comply with HIPAA?
Usually not. HIPAA applies to health plans, clearinghouses and providers, and to businesses working on their behalf. A consumer fitness app sold directly to users is normally outside it. However, the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule covers many health apps that are not under HIPAA, especially ones that sync with fitness trackers, so plan for it.
What does the FTC Health Breach Notification Rule mean in practice?
If health data is exposed or shared without authorisation, including through an analytics or ad SDK, you must notify affected users within 60 calendar days, and the FTC if 500 or more are affected. Penalties reach up to $53,088 per violation. In practice, keep health data out of third-party SDKs, document every data flow and get a lawyer’s view.
Can the app read data from Apple Watch, Fitbit or Garmin?
Apple Watch data arrives through HealthKit on iOS. On Android, Health Connect gathers data from many apps and devices that write to it. Some brands also offer their own APIs, which add per-brand work and approval steps. We usually start with HealthKit and Health Connect and add direct integrations only where your users need them.
Should subscriptions go through Apple and Google?
Digital plans and premium content sold inside the app use Apple in-app purchase and Google Play billing. As of October 2026, Google’s fee on auto-renewing subscriptions is 10% in the US, UK and EEA (plus 5% with Google Play Billing) and 15% elsewhere; Apple’s is 30%, or 15% under its Small Business Program. Gym memberships and in-person classes are physical services and must use a payment provider instead.
Flutter or native for a fitness app?
Flutter suits content- and coaching-led apps well, including HealthKit and Health Connect integration through mature plugins. Native is the stronger choice when the product depends on watch apps, background sensors, Bluetooth equipment or real-time pose detection. We recommend one after discovery, based on which of those features are in the first two releases.
How long does a fitness app MVP take?
After one to two weeks of discovery, an MVP with onboarding, workout plans, logging, health-data sync and subscriptions usually takes 8–16 weeks to build. Watch apps, coach tools or gym booking push it toward the longer end. You get an installable build every two weeks and can adjust priorities between sprints.
