Manual, automation and release QA

Hire mobile QA engineers who test on real devices and own the release gate

Hire mobile QA engineers through us when bugs are reaching your users faster than your developers can fix them. Our QA engineers write test plans from acceptance criteria, test sprint builds on real iPhones and Android phones, automate the regression suite in your CI, and tell you plainly whether a build is ready to ship. You see the CVs, you run the interview, and the first two weeks are a trial on your own releases.

Prefer to hand over testing as a managed service? See our mobile app testing services.

  • Manual and automation skills screened
  • iOS and Android real-device testing
  • Tests live in your repository and CI
  • Two-week trial on your own releases

When it makes sense to hire mobile QA engineers

The usual trigger is a pattern: releases slip because nobody trusts the build, developers test their own work and miss the same classes of bug, or one-star reviews mention crashes on phones nobody in the team owns. A dedicated QA engineer fixes the process, not only the bugs.

Stores make quality visible. Google Play’s Android vitals treat a user-perceived crash rate above 1.09% or an ANR rate above 0.47% as bad behaviour, measured over 28 days, and going over can reduce your visibility on Google Play and add a warning to your store listing. On iOS, Xcode Organizer flags regressions in launch time, hangs and memory against previous versions. A QA engineer who watches these dashboards catches problems a test plan misses.

A practical rule: if you ship every two weeks with more than two or three developers and no one whose job is testing, you are probably paying for QA already, in rework and hotfixes.

QA roles you can hire

The title “QA engineer” covers different jobs. Decide which one you need before you interview.

Manual and exploratory QA

Test plans from acceptance criteria, exploratory sessions, device matrix coverage, clear bug reports with steps, logs and video. The right first hire for most teams.

Automation engineer (SDET)

Builds and maintains UI and API test suites in CI. See how we approach automated app testing.

Performance-focused QA

Cold start, frame drops, memory and battery on low-end devices; Android vitals and Xcode Organizer monitoring. Linked to our app performance testing service.

Security-aware QA

Release checks against OWASP MASVS controls: storage, network, auth. Deep penetration tests stay with mobile app security testing specialists.

Release and beta manager

Runs TestFlight and Play testing tracks, collects beta feedback and owns the go or no-go checklist before each store submission.

QA lead

Sets test strategy, device matrix and release gates across several apps or teams, and mentors manual testers into automation.

Mobile QA engineer skills matrix by seniority

Most product teams need one mid-level engineer with automation skills, not a senior manager. Use this to calibrate.

Skill Junior Mid-level Senior
Test design Executes test cases; writes clear bug reports Writes test plans from acceptance criteria; boundary and negative cases Risk-based strategy; decides what not to test
Device coverage Tests on assigned devices Builds a device matrix from analytics Balances real devices, emulators and cloud farms against cost
iOS automation Runs existing XCUITest suites Writes XCUITest; understands Swift Testing for unit tests Designs page objects, test data and flake control
Android automation Runs Espresso or Compose tests Writes Espresso and Compose UI tests Test architecture across modules; hermetic test setups
Cross-platform tools Uses Maestro flows Appium or Maestro suites for Flutter and React Native apps Chooses tools per stack; keeps suites maintainable
API and backend Uses Postman to check responses Automated API tests, contract checks Test environments, data seeding, mocking strategy
Release Installs builds from TestFlight and Play Runs beta tracks; checks store rules before submission Owns release gates and post-release monitoring

Rates depend on seniority, hours and engagement length. Request a quote and we will price the exact profile.

Tools and platform facts your QA engineer should know

Ask candidates about these. Someone who has shipped mobile releases will know them without looking them up.

  • XCTest and Swift Testing: Apple recommends Swift Testing for new unit tests in Xcode 16 and later, and XCTest for UI and performance tests.
  • Espresso: it waits automatically for the main thread, AsyncTasks and idling resources, so a test full of sleep calls is a red flag.
  • Firebase Test Lab: it is deprecated and will shut down fully on 30 September 2027, with Google pointing users to the Developer Device Platform. New suites should plan for that.
  • TestFlight: up to 100 internal and 10,000 external testers, and builds expire after 90 days.
  • Play testing tracks: internal testing allows up to 100 testers; closed testing uses email lists of up to 2,000 users each. New personal developer accounts must run a closed test with at least 12 opted-in testers for 14 consecutive days before production access.
  • Notification permission: on Android 13 and later notifications are off by default for new installs, so permission-denied paths need their own test cases.

Interview questions to ask when you hire mobile QA engineers

Ask for reasoning and examples from releases they have shipped.

  1. Here is a login screen. What would you test? Listen for negative cases, password reset, account lockout, keyboard and autofill, offline, rotation, accessibility and what happens after an app update.
  2. How do you choose which devices to test on? Analytics or market data, OS versions, screen sizes, low-memory devices, and the manufacturer quirks that matter for your users.
  3. A test passes locally and fails one run in five in CI. What do you do? Treat it as a bug: check waits and test data, isolate, quarantine with a ticket rather than deleting it.
  4. What should never be automated? Exploratory testing, first-impression UX, and features changing every sprint; automate stable, high-value paths.
  5. How do you write a bug report a developer can fix without asking you anything? Build number, device and OS, steps, expected vs actual, logs, video, frequency.
  6. What checks do you run before an App Store submission? Demo account for review, permission prompt text, no placeholder content, account deletion if accounts exist, privacy labels matching SDKs.
  7. What is in OWASP MASVS, and what can a QA engineer check without a security specialist? Tokens not stored in plain preferences, HTTPS only, no personal data in logs or screenshots.
  8. How would you test a push notification feature? Permission granted and denied, foreground and background, tapping into the right screen, Android 13 permission and iOS provisional delivery.

Then give a short live task: a sprint build of your app and 30 minutes. The quality of the bug reports tells you most of what you need.

Want QA engineers screened against your release process?

Share your stack, release cadence and where bugs slip through. We will match QA engineers to that and include our interview notes for each candidate.

Onboarding plan for the first two weeks

The two weeks are the trial. By the end you should have a test plan, a device matrix and at least one release tested end to end.

Days 1–2: access and builds

Ticket board, TestFlight and Play testing tracks, crash dashboards, test devices and the backlog of known bugs.

Days 3–5: baseline

An exploratory pass of the current build on the device matrix, with a ranked list of the most serious issues found.

Days 6–8: test plan and first automation

A written regression checklist for the core flows, plus one automated test for the most critical path running in CI.

Days 9–10: a release and review

Testing a sprint build against acceptance criteria, then a trial review call. You continue, request a replacement or stop.

How hiring works through us

Send a brief covering platforms, stack, release cadence, manual or automation focus and hours. We return a shortlist with screening notes, you interview, and the engineer you approve starts a two-week trial. The full vetting process is on our hire mobile app developers page.

QA engineers usually join an existing team. Clients often hire Android developers and QA together, or hire a dedicated app development team that includes both. Commercial options are on app development engagement models. For pre-launch checks, our app launch checklist is a useful starting document.

What you get

  • You interview every candidate
  • Two-week trial on your own releases
  • Tests in your repository and CI
  • NDA before you share anything
  • Named project manager on our side
  • Replacement if it is not working

When not to hire a QA engineer

If you have one developer and an app with a handful of screens, a full-time QA hire is more than you need. A one-off independent test pass before launch, through our testing and QA service, is cheaper. And if the underlying problem is architecture, more testing will only find the same bugs faster; fix the code first.

Questions about hiring mobile QA engineers

Should I hire a manual QA engineer or an automation engineer first?

For most teams, start with a mid-level QA engineer who does manual and exploratory testing well and can automate the most critical flows. A pure automation engineer is valuable once the product is stable enough that tests will not be rewritten every sprint. Exploratory testing finds the bugs automation was never written to catch.

Do your QA engineers test on real devices?

Yes. Every engineer works with physical iPhones and Android phones from an agreed device matrix, plus simulators and emulators for fast checks. Cloud device farms add breadth for automated runs. Real devices matter for camera, push notifications, biometrics, battery, performance and manufacturer-specific behaviour.

Which automation tools do they use?

It depends on your stack. Native iOS apps use XCUITest for UI tests, with Swift Testing for unit tests. Native Android uses Espresso and Compose testing. Flutter and React Native apps often use Maestro or Appium for cross-platform flows. Tests live in your repository and run in your CI.

Can a QA engineer do security testing?

A good mobile QA engineer can run routine release checks based on OWASP MASVS, such as token storage, HTTPS-only traffic and personal data in logs. Full penetration testing, reverse engineering and tampering checks need a security specialist. We separate the two so you know exactly what was covered.

How much does it cost to hire a mobile QA engineer?

It depends on seniority, manual or automation focus, hours and engagement length, and we do not publish a rate card. As market context, 13 of the 16 Pakistani firms with a stated rate on page one of Clutch’s directory list $25 to $49 an hour. Send a brief and we will reply with a written quote and matched profiles.

Can a QA engineer in Pakistan test our US releases in time?

Usually this works in your favour. Lahore is nine or ten hours ahead of US Eastern, so a build sent at the end of your day can be tested overnight, with results waiting in the morning. For tight release windows, we agree an overlap of two to four hours.
