Islamic app development built with care for text, time and privacy

Islamic app development carries a responsibility most apps don’t: users trust the Quran text to be exact, the prayer time to be right for their city and method, and their religious practice to stay private. We build Quran, prayer times, learning, mosque and community apps for organisations and founders in the UK, USA, Europe, the Gulf and Pakistan. We are developers, not scholars: content and religious review stay with you and your advisers, and we build the app so that review is easy. This page is part of our industry app development hub.

  • Licensed Quran text, displayed verbatim
  • Users choose their prayer-time method
  • Arabic, Urdu and RTL layouts from the first design
  • NDA signed before discovery

What goes wrong with faith apps

Users forgive a slow screen. They do not forgive a wrong prayer time, a missing diacritic in an ayah or an adhan that plays at the wrong moment in a quiet office. Those mistakes spread quickly through community groups.

The causes are usually technical rather than religious. Text copied from an unverified source with encoding damage. A single hard-coded calculation method that is correct in one country and disputed in another. Notifications that fire late because the operating system put the app to sleep. Each one is preventable with the right decisions in discovery.

There is also a trust question. Many faith apps are funded by donations or run by charities, and users are sensitive to heavy ads, aggressive tracking or anything that feels like their worship is being sold.

Islamic and faith apps we build

Many products combine two or three of these in one app with a shared account and settings.

Quran and prayer times

Mushaf and translation reading, recitation audio, bookmarks, prayer times, adhan notifications and Qibla direction.

Quran learning and hifz

Lessons, teacher-led classes, memorisation tracking and revision schedules, plus live sessions. Overlaps with education app development.

Mosque and community apps

Local jama’ah times set by the mosque, announcements, event sign-ups, class timetables and donation links.

Duas, adhkar and habit apps

Collections with sources shown, reminders, counters and streaks designed to encourage rather than pressure.

Charity and donation apps

Campaigns, zakat and sadaqah funds, recurring giving, Gift Aid and receipts for registered charities.

Other faith communities

Scripture text, calendars, reminders, community and giving for churches, synagogues, temples and gurdwaras, with each community’s own content owners.

Text, timing and review in Islamic app development: the short version

Facts to frame discovery. Nothing here is a religious ruling or legal advice. The full treatment of Quran text licensing, calculation methods and adhan scheduling is on our Quran app development page. In brief: the Tanzil Project text is one option, licensed under Creative Commons Attribution 3.0 for verbatim copies only, with a credit and link to tanzil.net; users should choose their prayer-time method from the common ones, such as Muslim World League, Umm Al-Qura and University of Islamic Sciences, Karachi; and scholar review of duas, hadith and rulings is the client’s responsibility, which we support with an approval workflow in the admin panel.

Mosque, community and charity apps: donation rules and features

Giving is where faith apps meet the most rules: store policy, tax relief and the religious categories of the money itself. General facts, not legal, tax or religious advice.

Area Rule or decision What it means for the app
Donating inside an iOS app Under Apple Guidelines 3.2.1(vi) and 3.2.2(iv), only approved nonprofits may collect donations inside an app, and they must offer Apple Pay, disclose how funds are used and make tax receipts available A mosque or charity applies for Apple’s nonprofit approval first. Without it, the app must be free and send donors to a web page or SMS to give
Donating on Android Google Play billing must not be used for tax-exempt donations Donations go through a payment processor, never Play billing
UK Gift Aid Recognised charities claim 25p per £1 donated by eligible individuals; the declaration needs the donor’s full name, home address and an eligibility statement (HMRC Gift Aid guidance) A declaration step in checkout, stored with each gift and kept for 6 years after the last claimed donation. No Gift Aid on payments for goods, services or tickets
Fund categories Zakat, sadaqah and general funds may have different permitted uses, as set by the charity and its scholars Donors choose the category, each gift is recorded against it, and reports show allocation per fund
Zakat calculator Nisab basis, asset types and deductions follow the method your scholars approve Metal prices from a live feed, every input shown on the result, and a clear note that the figure is an estimate
Receipts and reporting Donors and trustees need a record of every gift Automatic receipts, annual statements, and exports for the charity’s accountant

Apps for other faith communities

The same building blocks serve churches, synagogues, temples and gurdwaras, but each community has its own content, calendar and governance. A church app usually centres on sermon audio and video, small groups, service rotas and giving. A gurdwara or temple app often needs festival calendars on lunar or lunisolar dates, volunteer rotas for community kitchens and live streams of daily services. Communities that observe a weekly day of rest may want the app to send no notifications on that day.

Scripture text is never generic. Translations of the Bible, the Guru Granth Sahib or any other scripture each have their own publisher and terms, so they go in the same content register we use for Quran translations. Leadership structures differ too: who approves content, who sees member data and who manages donations should match how the community is actually run.

Usually in v1

  • Service and event calendar
  • Audio and video of talks
  • Groups and rotas
  • Giving that follows store rules
  • Approver per content type

Privacy for faith app users

A prayer app knows when someone prays, where they live and which mosque they attend. That says a lot about a person, and in some countries it can put them at risk. We treat this usage as sensitive data and ask your counsel to confirm which data protection rules apply in each market: UK GDPR and EU GDPR, the UAE PDPL outside DIFC and ADGM, Saudi Arabia’s PDPL enforced by SDAIA, and Qatar’s PDPPL, regulated by the National Cyber Security Agency.

On iOS, linking app data with third-party data for advertising needs permission through App Tracking Transparency, and apps may not make features depend on users allowing tracking or notifications.

Our privacy defaults

  • Prayer times calculated on the device
  • City picker as an alternative to GPS
  • No account needed to read or pray
  • Analytics without personal identifiers
  • No prayer history sent to the server unless the user syncs
  • Account deletion inside the app

Scope your faith app before you price it

These answers move the estimate more than screen count.

  • Which texts, translations and recitations you have written rights to.
  • Who approves content, and how many reviewers there are.
  • Whether the organisation is a registered charity and has, or will apply for, Apple’s nonprofit approval.
  • Which donation categories you collect, and whether UK Gift Aid applies.
  • Launch cities and languages, for prayer-time testing and RTL layouts.
  • Then put those answers into the app cost calculator for a typical effort range.

Integrations and building blocks

Most of the hard work in this category is local to the device, which is good for privacy and offline use.

Component What it does Build note
Prayer-time engine Calculates times from location, date and method Runs on the device so times work offline; tested against published timetables for target cities
Location and compass City detection and Qibla direction Offer a manual city; show a calibration prompt when the compass reading is unreliable
Quran text and fonts Mushaf and verse display Licensed text loaded read-only; Arabic fonts tested with full diacritics and long translation lines
Recitation audio Streaming and downloaded recitations Background audio with lock-screen controls; downloads per surah to save data
Notifications Adhan, reminders, mosque announcements Scheduled locally for prayer times; ask permission in context. See push notifications
Subscriptions Premium content or ad-free tiers Digital content uses in-app purchases and subscriptions; donations never do. See payment gateway integration for giving

Quality and security practices for faith apps

Tested against OWASP MASVS, plus checks specific to religious content.

  • Quran text verified by checksum at build and at app start; any mismatch blocks display and alerts the team
  • Every content item carries a source and an approver in the admin panel
  • Prayer times regression-tested for target cities and methods after every release and around daylight-saving changes
  • Notifications tested on low-battery and restricted-background settings on real Android and iOS devices
  • Full RTL layouts for Arabic and Urdu, including mixed-direction lines and numerals
  • Donation flows tokenised by the processor; card data never touches your servers

How we de-risk faith app projects

Our standard process from how we work, with gates for content and accuracy.

Discovery and content register

One to two weeks. We list every text, translation, audio set and dataset, with its owner, licence and the person who reviews it, and agree default calculation methods per region with you.

Accuracy spike

Before UI work, we prove the prayer-time engine against published timetables for your launch cities and render the full Quran text in the chosen fonts.

Design for RTL and reading

Layouts drawn in Arabic or Urdu first, not mirrored afterwards. See mobile app UI/UX design services.

Sprints with demo builds

Two-week sprints with TestFlight and Play internal testing builds, so your reviewers check content inside the real app.

Launch timing

Store review can take longer than expected, so we submit well before Ramadan or other peak dates and keep a tested fallback build ready.

Islamic app development FAQs

Can a mosque take donations inside its app?

On iOS, only if it is an approved nonprofit under Apple’s Guideline 3.2.1(vi), offers Apple Pay, says how funds are used and provides tax receipts. Otherwise the app must be free and collect donations outside the app, for example on a web page. On Android, tax-exempt donations must not use Google Play billing. We plan the approval step into the launch timeline.

How should a zakat calculator work?

It should follow the method your scholars approve, not one we choose. Typically it asks for each asset type, deducts what the approved method allows, compares the total with a nisab threshold based on a live gold or silver price, and shows every input on the result. It should say clearly that the figure is an estimate, and payments should go to a zakat fund kept separate from general donations.

Can the app collect Gift Aid declarations?

Yes, for UK charities recognised by HMRC. Checkout asks eligible donors to confirm a declaration with their full name and home address, and the app stores it with each gift so the charity can claim 25p per £1. Declarations are kept for 6 years after the last claimed donation. Payments for goods, services or event tickets do not qualify, so the app keeps them apart.

Do you build apps for churches, temples and gurdwaras?

Yes. The building blocks are shared: calendars, audio and video, groups, rotas, reminders and giving that follows store rules. What changes is the content, the calendar system and who approves what. Each community’s scripture translations have their own publishers and terms, so we track rights the same way we do for Quran translations.

How should a faith app make money?

Common models are donations, an optional premium subscription and sponsorship by a charity or mosque. Tax-exempt donations must not use Google Play billing, while digital premium content does use Apple and Google in-app purchase. Many teams avoid tracking ads to protect user trust. Our app monetization guide compares the options.

Can you build for Gulf and South Asian audiences at once?

Yes. We design Arabic, Urdu and English layouts together, set regional defaults for calculation methods, and plan for different data laws in the UAE, Saudi Arabia, Qatar, the UK and Pakistan. Our team in Lahore overlaps most of the Gulf working day; see app development for Saudi Arabia.
