Manufacturing app development for the shop floor and the field
Manufacturing app development is judged in places office software never visits: a noisy line with no Wi-Fi in the corner, a technician wearing gloves on a roof, a quality inspector who needs the last approved drawing right now. We build shop-floor, maintenance, inspection, warehouse and field technician apps for manufacturers and service companies in the USA, UK, EU, UAE and Pakistan, connected to the ERP and asset systems you already run. This page sits in our industry app development hub.
- Offline-first by default
- ERP and CMMS integration through your backend
- Tested on the devices your crews actually carry
- NDA signed before discovery
Why industrial apps get abandoned
Industrial apps rarely fail in a demo. They fail in week three, when supervisors quietly bring the paper forms back. We hear the same reasons each time.
The app needs a signal it doesn’t have. Steel buildings, basements, plant rooms and rural sites all kill connectivity. An app that spins while it waits for the server gets put back in the pocket.
It was designed for an office worker. Small tap targets, long text fields and five-step menus don’t work with gloves, a torch in one hand or a screen in direct sunlight.
It doesn’t match what the ERP thinks happened. If a completed job, a used spare part or a scrap count does not reach the ERP correctly, finance stops trusting the app, and so does everyone else.
Good manufacturing app development starts with those constraints, not the feature list. Our discovery week includes a site visit or a video walk-through of the real environment, with the crew who will use the app.
Manufacturing and field service apps we build
Most clients start with one high-volume paper process and replace it end to end.
Field service and work orders
Job dispatch, schedules, routes, parts used, time on site, photos, customer signature and invoicing for technicians and installers.
Maintenance and CMMS apps
Planned and reactive maintenance, asset history, QR codes on machines, fault reporting with photos, and spare-part requests.
Quality and inspection
Configurable checklists, measurements with tolerance warnings, non-conformance reports and photo evidence tied to a batch or serial number.
Safety and compliance
Permits to work, lock-out records, toolbox talks, near-miss reports and training sign-off, with an audit trail per site.
Warehouse and inventory
Barcode and QR scanning for receiving, picking, cycle counts and transfers, synced to stock levels in your ERP.
Dealer and distributor apps
Product catalogues, price lists, order entry and warranty claims for your sales channel. See mobile ERP and CRM app development.
Compliance and data rules in manufacturing app development
General facts for discovery, not legal advice. Industry safety standards and certifications specific to your sector are for your quality and safety teams to define; we build the records they need.
Employee data is personal data
Technician location, timesheets, photos with faces and training records are personal data. In the UK and EU that means UK GDPR or EU GDPR: a lawful basis for each use, clear notice to staff, and limits on tracking. A common design choice is to record location only while a job is open, never all day, and to tell the technician when it is on. The UAE PDPL applies outside DIFC and ADGM, and Saudi Arabia’s PDPL has been in force since 14 September 2023.
Customer data in field service
Field service apps also hold customer names, addresses, site access notes and signatures. Keep site access codes and alarm details encrypted and visible only to the assigned technician for the job’s duration.
Electronic records in regulated plants
Pharmaceutical, medical device and food manufacturers regulated by the FDA keep many quality records under predicate rules. The FDA Part 11 guidance says Part 11 applies when those required records are kept electronically instead of on paper. FDA uses enforcement discretion on some Part 11 provisions, but still enforces access limits, system checks and electronic signature rules, and expects audit trails or other controls where users change regulated records. So an inspection app in a regulated plant needs named logins, signature meaning (“inspected by”, “approved by”) and a change history from the first release.
Distribution and OS updates
Staff-only apps can be distributed privately through your device management platform; yearly Android and iOS requirements are handled by our OS update compatibility support.
Shop-floor records: NCRs, permits to work and machine data
Offline-first sync is covered in depth on our field service app development page; in short, the device holds a local database, a sync queue and agreed conflict rules, and nothing is lost without signal. On the shop floor the harder problem is the record itself: what it must link to, who signs it, and what it must never touch.
| Record | What it must link to | Design rules we start from |
|---|---|---|
| Non-conformance report (NCR) | Batch or lot, serial number, work order, operation, machine, inspector | Scan, never type, batch and serial numbers. Disposition (rework, scrap, use as is, return to supplier) needs a named approver. One tap finds every serial from the same batch for containment. |
| Inspection result | Drawing or spec revision, measurement, tolerance, gauge | Show the approved revision only; flag out-of-tolerance values at entry; store raw readings, not just pass or fail. |
| Permit to work | Asset, isolation points, gas tests, each worker who signs on | Time-limited permits; every worker signs on and off; shift handover and suspension are recorded steps; closed permits are read-only. |
| Lockout/tagout procedure | Machine, energy sources, lock owners | Under OSHA’s lockout/tagout standard, each procedure is inspected at least annually by someone not using it; the app schedules and records that inspection. |
| Machine and process data | MES, historian or OPC UA server (IEC 62541) | Read through your backend or MES, never straight from a PLC. Read-only by default; writing to control systems is out of scope unless your controls engineers own it. |
Append-only history for every record: who, when, on which device, and what changed. Corrections are new entries, not edits.
Scope your industrial app before you price it
These answers move the estimate more than screen count.
- The paper form or spreadsheet you want to replace first, and how many people use it per shift.
- Which systems own work orders, assets, stock and quality records, and whether they have APIs.
- Whether you are FDA-regulated or certified to a quality standard that dictates record rules.
- Which machine data the app needs, and who in controls engineering signs off access.
- Devices, gloves, lighting and connectivity on the worst site.
Then put those answers into the app cost calculator for a typical effort range.
Integrations common in manufacturing and field service apps
The integration plan matters more than the UI. We put every connection behind your backend so the app works the same whichever system sits behind it.
| Integration | What it does | Build note |
|---|---|---|
| ERP | Work orders, stock, parts, costs, invoices | Batch sync windows and idempotent writes so a retry never posts a part twice. See enterprise app integration |
| CMMS or asset register | Asset hierarchy, maintenance plans, history | Cache the assets for a site before the shift; look up by QR code offline |
| Barcode and QR scanning | Parts, assets, batches, locations | On-device scanning with ML Kit, or the scanner built into rugged Android devices |
| Bluetooth sensors and tools | Vibration, temperature, torque, label printers | Android 12+ needs Nearby devices permission; iOS limits background BLE. See IoT app development |
| Maps and routing | Technician location, routes, ETAs | Track only during open jobs; see location services |
| Identity provider and MDM | Staff sign-in, device policies, private app distribution | OAuth with PKCE in the system browser; shared devices need fast user switching |
| Push notifications | New jobs, schedule changes, approvals | Never put customer addresses or access codes in the notification text |
Security practices for industrial apps
Tested against OWASP MASVS. Shared and rugged devices change the threat model, so we design for them explicitly.
- SSO through your identity provider, with session timeouts suited to shared shift devices
- Role-based access per site and job, so a contractor sees only the jobs assigned to them
- Local database encrypted, keys in Android Keystore or iOS Keychain, remote wipe through MDM
- Photos stored in the app’s sandbox, not the shared camera roll, and removed after confirmed upload
- Append-only audit log for inspections, sign-offs and safety records, with who, when and on which device
- Signed API requests and certificate pinning; Play Integrity and App Attest on sensitive actions
- Sync conflicts logged and surfaced to a supervisor, never silently overwritten
- No customer access codes, alarm PINs or personal data in logs or crash reports

How we de-risk industrial projects
Our standard process from how we work, adapted for sites and shifts.
Discovery with the crew
One to two weeks, including a site visit or video walk-through, the paper forms you want to replace and interviews with two or three real users, not just managers.
Integration and device spike
The first sprint proves a round trip to your ERP test environment and runs the app on your actual devices, including scanners and any Bluetooth hardware.
Offline sync built first
The local database, sync queue and conflict rules come before polish, because retrofitting offline is the most expensive change in this sector.
Sprints and pilot site
Two-week sprints with demo builds, then a pilot at one site or with one crew before wider rollout through your MDM.
Rollout and support
Training material, a feedback channel for crews and post-launch fixes. Ongoing upkeep is covered by mobile app maintenance services.
Manufacturing app development FAQs
How does the app trace an NCR to batch and serial numbers?
The inspector scans the batch, lot or serial label, so numbers are never typed. The NCR then links to the work order, operation, machine and drawing revision. Disposition needs a named approver, and a single search shows every serial from the same batch so containment starts at once. Corrections are added as new entries, so the history stays intact for audits.
Can permits to work move from paper to an app?
Yes, if the app records more than the paper did. Each permit is tied to an asset and its isolation points, every worker signs on and off, gas tests are logged with times, and shift handover and suspension are explicit steps. Closed permits become read-only. Your safety team defines the permit rules; we build them so the app enforces the order of steps.
Do we need FDA Part 11 controls in our inspection app?
If you are FDA-regulated and the app keeps records required by predicate rules electronically, Part 11 applies. FDA’s guidance uses enforcement discretion on some provisions but still expects access limits, system checks, electronic signature controls and audit trails where regulated records change. Your quality team confirms scope; we build named logins, signature meanings and change history.
Do we need rugged devices?
Not always. Consumer phones in good cases work for many field teams. Rugged Android devices make sense when you scan all day, work in dust, water or cold, or share devices across shifts. We test on whatever you choose and adjust tap targets, contrast and scanning to suit.
Can the app read data from MES, PLCs or sensors?
Yes, through the right layer. Bluetooth sensors and label printers connect directly from the app. Machine and process data should come through your MES, historian or an OPC UA server via your backend, never straight from a PLC, and read-only unless your controls engineers own the write path. We prove the connection with real hardware in the first sprint.
How much does an industrial app cost?
Offline sync and ERP integration usually cost more than the screens, so they are line items in our quote. The app cost calculator gives a first range using the $25 to $49 per hour band most Pakistan firms list on Clutch. Discovery turns that range into a fixed price.
