App Cost Calculator: A Ballpark Budget in Two Minutes

Use this app cost calculator to turn five choices (platforms, number of screens, features, backend and design depth) into a cost range, an effort-hours range and a timeline in weeks. It follows the hours-first logic of our written estimates.

  • Shows hours and weeks, not just a total
  • Uses a stated market rate band
  • No email needed to see your result
1 Platforms
2 How many screens?
15

A simple app has 5–12 screens, a typical marketplace or booking app 20–35, a super-app 50+.

3 Features
4 Backend
5 Design depth

How the app cost calculator works

Three steps sit behind every result.

Your inputs define the scope

You choose platforms, slide the number of screens (5 to 60), tick the features you need, pick a backend option and set the design depth. Together these describe roughly what needs to be designed, built and tested.

Scope becomes effort hours

Each input maps to typical effort hours for design and build, using the scope logic from our app development cost guide. The calculator then adds QA and project management on top, because no release ships without them.

Hours meet a rate band

Hours are multiplied by a rate band, set by default at $25 to $49 per hour. That matches the market range on Clutch’s Pakistan app developer directory, where 13 of 16 firms with a stated rate on page one list $25 to $49 per hour. Hours also convert into a timeline in weeks. The result is a range, because both hours and rates have a spread.

What each input changes

Change one input at a time to see which decisions matter most.

Input What it changes Why it matters
Platforms (cross-platform, iOS only, Android only, or two native apps) App development hours Clutch finds two native apps roughly double cost compared with one cross-platform build
Number of screens (5 to 60) Design, build and test hours Every screen needs layout, states, edge cases and QA, so effort climbs steadily with the count
Features checklist Integration and backend hours 16 options, from sign-up and payment gateway integration to AI, offline sync and RTL languages. Each brings setup, edge cases and testing
Backend Server-side hours None, a managed backend (Firebase or Supabase), or a custom API and database. Custom business logic costs most
Design depth Design and front-end hours Clean standard UI, custom branded UI, or custom UI with rich animation. Motion and bespoke components take longer than a design-system interface

QA and project management are added on top of these hours. Hour mappings are internal planning estimates and are reviewed as our delivery data grows.

How to read your result

You will see three numbers: a cost range, an effort-hours range and a timeline in weeks. Together they are a ballpark to test the idea against your budget, not a quote.

The hour range is the most portable part of the result. Hours travel; rates do not. If another agency quotes far fewer hours, ask what they left out.

The cost range is hours multiplied by the rate band. The low end assumes a tidy scope and fast feedback; the high end allows for rework.

The timeline in weeks assumes discovery is done. Slow sign-offs stretch it.

For context, Clutch’s app development cost research finds most projects on its platform fall between $10,000 and $49,999. A result far outside that is worth a conversation.

What the calculator can’t know

These items most often move a signed quote away from a calculator estimate.

  • Integration quality. The calculator counts third-party integrations, but it cannot see whether the API is clean or barely documented. A well-documented payment API takes days; a legacy ERP with no sandbox can take weeks.
  • Data migration. Moving users, orders or content from an old app or database means mapping fields, cleaning records and testing the import. None of that appears as a screen or a feature.
  • Compliance. Health, finance and children’s apps need extra work on privacy, audit logs and security testing against OWASP MASVS.
  • Store review risk. Apps that collect sensitive data or rely on web content need extra care to pass App Store and Google Play review.
  • Ongoing costs. Store fees, hosting, third-party usage and maintenance sit outside the build estimate (see app maintenance cost).

Planning tips before you request a quote

Range too high? Cut scope before you look for a cheaper team: one user role first, a managed backend, cross-platform unless a device feature needs native. Our MVP app development service is built around exactly this.

Still choosing a stack? Read native vs cross-platform app development. For budgets by app type, see how much does it cost to build an app, the cost to build an app like Uber or e-commerce app development cost.

Questions about the cost estimator

How accurate is an app cost calculator?

Accurate enough to decide whether an idea fits your budget, not accurate enough to sign a contract. Our tool turns your platforms, screens, features, backend and design choices into typical effort hours, adds QA and project management, and multiplies the total by a rate band. Signed quotes move with integration quality, compliance needs and edge cases a form cannot capture. Expect the range to narrow after a short discovery.

What rate does the calculator use?

The default band is $25 to $49 per hour, a market band rather than our own price list. As a reference, Clutch’s Pakistan app developer directory shows 13 of the 16 firms with a stated rate on page one charging $25 to $49 per hour. Because hours are shown too, you can apply any rate you are comparing.

Does the estimate include store fees and hosting?

No. The result covers design, development, QA and project management for the first release. Running costs are separate: Apple’s developer program is $99 per year, Google Play Console is a one-time $25, and hosting, third-party APIs and maintenance depend on usage. Our app development cost guide lists these in a table.

Why is my estimate a range instead of one number?

Because both inputs have a spread. The same feature can take more or fewer hours depending on edge cases and the quality of third-party APIs, and rates differ between vendors. A single number would hide that uncertainty. The range makes it visible, and discovery is how we narrow it to one fixed figure.

Do I need to give my email to see the result?

No. You can see the cost range, hours and timeline without signing up. If you want a fixed quote, send the result through the quote form along with a short description of your users and goals. We reply within one business day with questions and next steps.

What should I do if the estimate is over my budget?

Cut scope before you cut quality. Untick features that can wait, lower the screen count by removing a user role from version one, switch to a managed backend, and consider one cross-platform codebase instead of two native apps. Re-run the calculator after each change to see the effect. A phased MVP almost always costs less than squeezing a full product into a smaller budget.
