E-commerce App Development Cost: What You Pay For and Why

App, store integration or custom backend, admin and QA: typical effort hours for an e-commerce app MVP, v1 and scale, plus running costs.

E-commerce app development cost depends on one decision more than any other: does the app sit on top of a store platform you already run, or does it need its own commerce backend? The first is a mobile front end with integrations. The second is a full product with catalogue, cart, orders, inventory and an admin panel. The second path typically adds 500–800 hours, more than half again, before you add a single extra feature.

Both paths are costed below. For how we build shopping apps, see the e-commerce app development solution page. For a fast range on your own scope, use the app cost calculator.

The method is the same one used in our guide on how much it costs to build an app: effort hours by component, times a market rate band, plus running costs. Hours are our typical planning estimates, not quotes. Dollar figures apply the $25–$49/hr band most firms list on the Clutch Pakistan app developer directory, to show the arithmetic.

The components of a shopping app

  • Customer app (iOS and Android): home and category pages, search and filters, product pages with variants, cart, checkout, wishlist, account and order history, push notifications.
  • Commerce backend: products, prices, stock, cart, orders, customers, discounts, taxes and shipping. If you already run a store platform with a solid API, this exists and the app consumes it.
  • Integration layer: payments, shipping rates, push triggers such as abandoned-cart and order-status messages, analytics and deep links from emails and ads.
  • Admin: on a store platform, merchandising stays where it is and the app only needs extras such as app banners and push campaigns. With a custom backend you build the whole admin: products, orders, refunds, customers, reports.

Our list of must-have features for e-commerce apps helps you decide what belongs in version one.

Typical effort estimate for an e-commerce app MVP, by component

Assumptions: a single-brand store already running on a platform with a usable API (for example Shopify or WooCommerce). One Flutter app for iOS and Android, about 20 screens, guest and account checkout, card and Apple Pay/Google Pay through a payment SDK, push notifications for abandoned carts and order status, wishlist, order history, in-app account deletion. Products, stock, discounts and fulfilment stay in the existing platform.

Component Typical effort estimate (hours) What the hours cover
Discovery & specification 40–60 Shopping flows, catalogue structure, checkout rules, integration plan, backlog
UI/UX design 110–170 Home, category, search, product, cart, checkout, account, order screens; design system; prototype
Mobile app (iOS and Android) 380–520 Catalogue browsing, search and filters, product variants, cart, checkout, wishlist, orders, account, push opt-in
Integration layer & backend 130–200 Store platform API, payment SDK, shipping rates, push triggers (abandoned cart, order status), deep links
Admin additions 60–100 App banners and home layout, push campaigns, app-specific promos; products stay in the store platform
QA on real devices 110–160 Checkout on both platforms, payment sandbox, variants and stock edge cases, regression
Project management & release 70–90 Sprints, demos, CI, TestFlight, Play internal testing, store submission
Total 900–1,300 At $25–$49/hr: $22,500–$63,700

Typical effort estimate for planning, not a quote. Dollar figures apply the Clutch Pakistan directory band ($25–$49/hr) as market data, not our prices.

Store platform or custom backend: how it changes e-commerce app development cost

At about 900–1,300 hours, the MVP above sits in the upper half of the 700–1,300-hour range our app development cost guide gives for e-commerce store apps, because it includes checkout in-app rather than handing off to a web view.

Building your own commerce backend typically adds 500–800 hours for the data model, cart and order logic, discounts, taxes and an admin panel with products, orders and refunds. Choose it when your rules do not fit a platform: subscriptions with complex box logic, B2B price lists per customer, rental or made-to-order flows, or a marketplace with many sellers. Otherwise the platform’s years of edge-case handling are worth more than the flexibility.

One trap to avoid: wrapping your mobile website in an app shell. Apple’s Guideline 4.2 requires features and UI that lift an app beyond a repackaged website, and thin wrappers get rejected. Native search, saved carts, push and fast checkout are what make an app worth installing.

MVP vs version 1 vs scale: typical effort ranges

Rows are cumulative. Version one often includes moving to a custom backend once the business outgrows platform limits.

Stage Typical effort estimate (hours) At $25–$49/hr Typical scope
MVP (app on your existing store) 900–1,300 $22,500–$63,700 Customer app connected to your store platform, card and wallet payments, push, order tracking
Version 1 (custom backend or richer app) 1,800–2,800 $45,000–$137,200 Own commerce backend and admin, loyalty and referrals, reviews, recommendations, multi-currency, BNPL, offline-tolerant browsing
Scale (multi-vendor or omnichannel) 3,500–6,000+ $87,500–$294,000+ Multi-vendor marketplace with split payouts, ERP/OMS and warehouse integrations, store pickup, personalisation, load testing

Typical effort estimate, not a quote. Dollar column multiplies hours by the Clutch Pakistan $25–$49/hr band for illustration.

Key takeaway

If a store platform already runs your catalogue and orders, build the app on top of it. You pay for the mobile experience customers notice, not for re-creating stock, tax and discount logic that already works.

Features that move the estimate most

Typical added effort on top of the MVP. Search quality and checkout polish usually earn their hours; heavy personalisation often waits.

Feature Typical added effort Why it costs what it costs
Advanced search (typo tolerance, facets, synonyms) 60–160 hours Search service integration, index sync, relevance tuning
Loyalty points and referrals 100–220 hours Earn and burn rules, fraud limits, ledger, account screens
Product reviews with photos 60–140 hours Upload, moderation and display; user content needs a report path
Recommendations and personalisation 100–250 hours Event tracking, vendor or model integration, placement testing
Multi-currency and multi-language 80–200 hours Price display, tax rules, RTL layouts for Arabic, translated content
Buy now, pay later 40–100 hours per provider SDK, eligibility messaging, order status handling
ERP, OMS or warehouse integration 150–400 hours per system Data mapping, sync schedules, error queues; quality of the other API decides it
Click-and-collect / store stock 100–200 hours Store locator, per-store stock, pickup notifications

Typical effort estimate, not a quote. Ranges assume standard SDKs and a competent team.

Payments, PCI and why store fees don’t apply

Physical goods must not use Apple in-app purchase or Google Play billing. Apple’s Guideline 3.1.3(e) requires other payment methods for physical goods, and Google Play’s payments policy bars Play billing for them. So stores take no commission on your product sales; your payment gateway charges processing fees instead.

Card security is the other line. Stripe notes that with its mobile SDKs card data never touches your servers, and merchants typically qualify for SAQ A, the lowest-burden PCI DSS option, though that does not make you compliant by default. Using a tokenising SDK rather than building card forms yourself saves both build hours and audit cost. Our payment gateway integration page covers the options, including JazzCash and Easypaisa for Pakistan.

Store commissions only apply if you sell digital items in the app, such as a paid membership that changes what the app does.

Worked example: what payment processing costs per order

Because stores take nothing on physical products, the gateway is your commission line. Assumptions: a $60 average order, 2,000 orders a month, Stripe’s US list prices as of October 2026: 2.9% + 30¢ for domestic cards and wallets, +1.5% for international cards and +1% when currency conversion is needed, and 5.99% + 30¢ for Klarna (Stripe pricing). Other gateways and negotiated rates differ.

Payment method Fee on a $60 order Share of the order If all 2,000 orders paid this way
Domestic card, Apple Pay or Google Pay $2.04 3.4% $4,080 a month
International card with currency conversion $3.54 5.9% $7,080 a month
Klarna (pay later) $3.89 6.5% $7,788 a month
Mixed: 80% domestic, 10% international, 10% Klarna About $2.38 average 4.0% About $4,751 a month

Illustrative only; order value, volume and mix are assumptions. Two build decisions follow. Pay-later costs about three percentage points more than a card, so offer it where it lifts basket size, not by default on every order. And the fixed 30¢ weighs more on small baskets, which is why minimum order values matter. On the platform side, Shopify says Storefront API buyer traffic “isn’t rate-limited at all”, while Admin API limits are set by calculated query cost per plan (Shopify API limits), so the app should read catalogue and cart through the Storefront API. On a self-hosted store such as WooCommerce, the practical limit is your own server, so load-test before a sale.

Running costs after launch

  • Store platform plan and app-related add-ons: some platforms charge more for API access or headless use.
  • Payment processing: per-transaction fees, plus fees for wallets and BNPL providers.
  • Search and recommendations services: usually priced by records and queries.
  • Push and messaging: low cost per message, but segmentation tools are often paid tiers.
  • Hosting for your integration layer or custom backend: scales with traffic peaks such as sales events.
  • Image CDN: product photos dominate bandwidth.
  • Maintenance: yearly iOS and Android SDK requirements and platform API version changes. Our app maintenance cost checklist lists what to budget.

Compliance items that change the estimate

  • EU accessibility. The European Accessibility Act applies from 28 June 2025 to e-commerce services placed on the market after that date, including apps. Accessible design, labelled controls, dynamic text and screen-reader testing need to be in the estimate if you sell in the EU.
  • Account deletion. Apple requires in-app account deletion for apps with account creation; on a store platform this also means deleting or anonymising the customer record through its API.
  • Privacy and tracking. Marketing SDKs change your App Store privacy information and, in Europe, your consent requirements. Each one adds integration and consent work.
  • California. Larger retailers may fall under CCPA thresholds, which brings opt-out of sale or sharing, including Global Privacy Control signals, into the app’s settings. Check with your lawyer.

Sector context, such as POS and loyalty integrations, is on our e-commerce and retail app development page.

How to cut the cost

  • Keep the platform. Use your store platform’s API instead of a custom backend until it blocks a feature you need.
  • One cross-platform app. Clutch reports that separate native iOS and Android builds roughly double cost; a shopping app is a strong fit for Flutter or React Native.
  • Native checkout, web content. Build browsing, cart and checkout natively; show long-form pages like policies and blog posts as web content.
  • Hosted search first. A search service beats building relevance logic yourself.
  • Consider a PWA if you are testing demand. Our progressive web app development page explains when it is enough.

If you plan to host other sellers, the cost model changes; see multi-vendor marketplace app development. If you sell groceries with delivery slots and substitutions, see grocery delivery app development cost.

FAQs about e-commerce app development cost

How much does it cost to build an e-commerce app?

A single-brand shopping app built on an existing store platform typically needs about 900–1,300 hours. At the $25–$49 per hour band most firms list on Clutch’s Pakistan directory, that is roughly $22,500–$63,700. A custom commerce backend and admin typically add 500–800 hours, and multi-vendor or omnichannel builds can pass 6,000 hours. These are planning estimates.

Is it cheaper to build a Shopify mobile app than a custom one?

Usually, yes. When products, stock, discounts and orders already live in Shopify or a similar platform, the app consumes its API and you skip building that backend and its admin. Custom makes sense when your pricing, subscription or marketplace rules do not fit the platform, or when platform API limits start to block features you need.

Do Apple and Google take a commission on product sales?

No. Physical goods must use payment methods other than Apple in-app purchase, and Google Play billing must not be used for physical goods. You pay your payment gateway’s processing fees instead, typically a percentage plus a fixed fee per order. Store commissions apply only to digital goods or subscriptions sold in the app, such as a paid membership that changes what the app does.

How long does it take to build a shopping app?

After a one-to-two-week discovery, an app on an existing store platform typically takes 8 to 12 weeks with a team of three to five working in two-week sprints. With a custom backend and admin, expect closer to 14 to 16 weeks. Each sprint ends with a demo build in TestFlight and Google Play internal testing.

Can I just turn my store website into an app?

A plain wrapper around your mobile site is likely to be rejected. Apple’s Guideline 4.2 requires an app to offer features, content and UI beyond a repackaged website. A hybrid approach works: native browsing, cart, checkout and push, with some content pages shown as web views. Our website-to-app guide covers the trade-offs in detail.
