Loyalty and rewards apps
Loyalty app development with a points ledger you can audit
Loyalty app development, as we scope it, covers the member app, the staff tools at the till and the programme admin behind them: points, tiers, stamps, offers, referrals and wallet passes, all connected to the POS or e-commerce platform where purchases actually happen. We build for retailers, restaurant and cafe groups, fuel and convenience chains, salons and consumer brands in the USA, UK, UAE, Europe and Australia, from a Lahore team that signs an NDA first and keeps the code in your repository.
- Points as an append-only ledger, not a counter
- Earning tied to real POS or online transactions
- Fraud and abuse controls from the first release
- Demo build every two-week sprint
Who a loyalty app is for
Loyalty apps work for businesses with frequent, repeat purchases and enough margin to fund rewards: coffee and quick-service chains, grocery and convenience stores, fashion and beauty retailers, fuel stations, salons and gyms. They also suit brands that sell through other retailers and want a direct relationship through receipt scanning or product codes. Most of our loyalty projects sit under e-commerce and retail app development, and many are added to an existing ecommerce app or restaurant ordering app rather than built alone.
Be honest about the economics first. If customers buy from you twice a year, a standalone app will not be opened; a card in Apple Wallet or Google Wallet plus email may do the job for a fraction of the cost. And a programme with rewards nobody wants is a discount scheme with extra steps. We will ask about purchase frequency, margins and what you want customers to do differently before we talk about screens.
The apps in a loyalty programme
The member app gets the attention, but the staff and admin surfaces decide whether the programme is trusted and profitable.
Member app
Digital membership card with QR or barcode, points balance and history, tier progress, available rewards, personal offers, stamp cards, referral codes, store finder, receipts and wallet pass. Often embedded in your shopping or ordering app.
Staff and till tools
Scan the member code at the POS or on a staff app, award points for the basket, redeem rewards, apply offers and handle edge cases such as returns and missed points, with manager approval above set limits.
Programme admin
Earn and burn rules, tiers, rewards catalogue, offer campaigns and targeting, member search, manual adjustments with reason codes, fraud alerts, liability reports and exports for finance.
Core features per app
The MVP most programmes launch with. More mechanics rarely means more loyalty; clear rules do.
| Member app | Staff and till tools | Programme admin |
|---|---|---|
| Sign-up with phone or email, consent choices, in-app account deletion | Member lookup by QR, barcode or phone | Earn rules by spend, product or category |
| Digital card and wallet pass | Points awarded from the POS basket | Burn rules and rewards catalogue |
| Balance, history and expiry dates | Reward redemption with confirmation | Tiers with thresholds and benefits |
| Rewards and offers list | Returns reverse the points earned | Offer campaigns by segment and date |
| Stamp cards for single products | Manual adjustments with approval limits | Member search and adjustment log |
| Referral code and tracking | Daily summary per store | Fraud alerts and velocity limits |
| Push and in-app inbox for offers | Offline queue if the network drops | Points liability and redemption reports |
The ledger, POS links and fraud: what drives cost
Points are money, so model them like money
The single most important decision in loyalty app development is to store points as an append-only ledger: every earn, burn, expiry, reversal and adjustment is a row with a source and a reason, and the balance is calculated from them. Programmes built on a single “balance” number cannot explain a customer complaint, reverse a refunded purchase correctly or report outstanding points liability to finance. Finance teams treat unredeemed points as a liability, so the reporting has to stand up.
Earning has to come from verified transactions
Points must follow purchases the business can verify. The clean path is POS integration: the member code is scanned, the basket is sent to the loyalty backend, and points are awarded with the receipt reference. For online sales, the e-commerce platform sends order events. Receipt scanning works for brands selling through other retailers, but it needs duplicate detection and manual review, and it is the most abused earn channel.
Fraud and abuse
Every loyalty programme is attacked: staff scanning their own card on customer purchases, fake referral accounts, shared screenshots of codes, receipts claimed twice. Controls include rotating member codes, velocity limits, device checks, referral rewards that pay only after the referred customer’s first real purchase, and alerts on unusual staff activity. Our mobile app security testing service covers the app side.

Recommended tech stack for a loyalty app
Our defaults and why. If loyalty is a feature inside an existing app, we build in that app’s stack and add a loyalty service behind it.
| Layer | Default choice | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Member app | Flutter or React Native | Standard UI; one codebase for iOS and Android |
| Wallet passes | Apple Wallet and Google Wallet passes | A card customers carry without opening the app; balances can update on the pass |
| Loyalty backend | Node.js or Laravel with PostgreSQL | Ledger rows need transactions, constraints and auditability |
| Event intake | Queue for POS and e-commerce events | Purchases arrive in bursts and must be processed once, in order |
| Admin | React web app on the same API | Marketing and finance teams work on desktops |
| Monitoring | Crashlytics or Sentry, plus ledger reconciliation jobs | A daily job checks balances against the ledger and alerts on drift |
We design the loyalty service as its own API, following our mobile app backend development approach, so the POS, website and app all use the same rules.
Integrations a loyalty programme needs
- POS systems: member identification at the till, basket data and refunds. Depends on your POS vendor’s API or a plugin model.
- E-commerce platforms: order and refund events from your store, plus points shown in the cart.
- Wallet passes: Apple Wallet and Google Wallet with balance updates.
- Messaging: push, email and SMS for offers and expiry reminders. See our push notifications page for permission timing.
- CRM and analytics: member segments and campaign results sent to the tools your marketing team uses.
- Payments: only if you sell paid memberships or gift cards; see payment gateway integration.
Store-policy and privacy notes for loyalty apps
What counts as a digital purchase
Points earned on physical purchases and redeemed for physical goods or services sit outside in-app purchase. Apple’s guideline 3.1.3(e) says goods and services consumed outside the app must use payment methods other than in-app purchase (App Review Guidelines). It changes if the app sells digital extras, such as premium features or a paid in-app membership whose benefits are inside the app: guideline 3.1.1 then requires in-app purchase. Paid memberships with real-world benefits need careful design, so we check them against the current rules during discovery. Google Play’s payments policy draws a similar line between digital items and physical goods (Google Play Payments policy).
Crypto-style rewards
Apple’s guideline 3.1.5(v) does not allow apps to offer cryptocurrency as a reward for tasks such as downloading other apps. Keep rewards in points, vouchers or products.
Purchase history is personal data
Under GDPR, UK GDPR and the CCPA, a loyalty programme’s purchase history and targeting are personal data. Separate marketing consent from programme membership, respect opt-outs of sale or sharing under the CCPA, and let members delete their account in the app, which Apple requires when sign-up happens in the app. If you share data with third-party AI tools for personalisation, Apple’s guideline 5.1.2(i) requires clear disclosure and explicit permission. Not legal advice; your counsel writes the terms.
Typical effort estimate (hours) by version
Typical effort estimates (hours), not quotes, for a cross-platform member app, a loyalty backend with ledger, staff tools and an admin. Rows are cumulative. Adding loyalty to an existing app usually lands near the lower end of the MVP row.
| Version | What is included | Typical effort estimate (hours) | At the $25–$49/hr market band |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP (one brand, one POS) | Member app, digital card and wallet pass, points ledger, earn and burn rules, rewards catalogue, offers, POS or e-commerce integration, staff tools, admin and liability report | 800 to 1,300 | $20,000 to $63,700 |
| Version 1 (growth) | Tiers, stamp cards, referrals with fraud controls, segmented campaigns, push and inbox, receipt scanning with review queue, CRM export | 1,400 to 2,200 | $35,000 to $107,800 |
| Scale (coalition or multi-country) | Partner earn and burn, personalised offers, gamified challenges, paid tiers, several POS systems, multi-currency rules, load testing | 2,800 to 4,200+ | $70,000 to $205,800+ |
Dollar figures multiply the hours by the $25–$49/hr band most firms list on the Clutch Pakistan app developer directory. That is market data for illustration, not our pricing. Our app development cost guide explains the tiers these figures sit in; the ecommerce app development cost breakdown covers loyalty as part of a shopping app.
Loyalty programme models
- Points per spend: earn per unit of currency, redeem for rewards. Flexible, but customers need to understand the value of a point.
- Stamp cards: buy nine, get the tenth free. Simple and effective for cafes and single-product purchases.
- Tiers: spend thresholds that give better earn rates or perks. Good for higher-value retail and travel.
- Paid membership: a fee for guaranteed benefits such as free delivery or member prices. Strong retention, but subject to the store rules above.
- Coalition: several brands share one currency, which spreads cost but adds settlement between partners.
The mechanic changes the ledger and reporting. Tiers need qualification periods; coalitions need partner settlement reports.
How we build it
The same delivery rules as every project; for loyalty we test the ledger and abuse cases hardest.
NDA and discovery
NDA, then one to two weeks of workshops: programme rules, POS and e-commerce access, finance reporting and fraud scenarios, written down. A fixed price follows.
Design and prototype
Clickable Figma prototypes for the member app and till flow, tested with staff and a few real customers.
Two-week sprints
App, loyalty service and admin built together, with a TestFlight and Play internal testing build each sprint.
QA on real devices
Ledger tests for every earn, burn, refund and expiry case, plus scanning at real tills and offline behaviour.
Pilot and launch
A few stores or a staff-only pilot first, then store submission and launch with a sign-up campaign.
Support after launch
Monitoring, reconciliation checks, campaign tooling updates and OS releases under a maintenance plan you choose.
Loyalty app development FAQs
How long does loyalty app development take?
After one to two weeks of discovery, an MVP with a member app, points ledger, POS or online integration, staff tools and admin typically takes 8 to 12 weeks. POS integration is the main variable, because it depends on the vendor’s API and approval. You get a demo build every two-week sprint.
Should loyalty be a separate app or part of our existing one?
If you already have a shopping or ordering app, add loyalty to it. Customers do not want two apps from one brand, and points next to the checkout drive more use. A separate app makes sense when you have no app yet, or when loyalty spans several brands or partners.
Can it work with our POS?
Usually, if your POS vendor offers an API or plugin model for loyalty. Points are awarded from the actual basket, and refunds reverse them. If integration is not possible at first, staff can scan the member code on a tablet and enter the receipt total, with limits and audit logs to control abuse.
How do you stop loyalty fraud?
We award points only from verified transactions, rotate member codes so screenshots expire, set velocity limits, pay referral rewards only after a real purchase, and flag unusual staff activity. Every adjustment needs a reason and a user. Reports show patterns finance and operations can act on.
Can members add their card to Apple Wallet or Google Wallet?
Yes. A wallet pass shows the member code at the till without opening the app, and the balance can update on the pass. It is one of the cheapest features to add and one of the most used, especially for customers who rarely open apps.
Do Apple and Google take a cut of rewards?
Not for points earned on physical purchases and redeemed for physical goods or services, which fall outside in-app purchase. If the app sells digital benefits used inside the app, such as premium features, in-app purchase rules and commission apply. We check your programme design against the current guidelines in discovery.
