Travel booking apps
Travel app development for tours, packages, flights and itineraries
Our travel app development work covers booking apps for tour operators and travel agencies, package and pilgrimage travel apps, activity marketplaces and itinerary apps that keep a whole trip in one place. We build the iOS and Android apps, the booking backend, supplier integrations and the operations console your agents use.
Travel is a supplier business. The price on screen comes from someone else’s system, it changes by the minute, and a booking is only real when the supplier confirms it. Most travel apps that disappoint do so because the app promised a price or seat the supplier no longer had. We design around that from the first sprint.
- Supplier APIs scoped before design
- Price and availability re-checked before payment
- Offline itineraries and documents
- Code and store accounts owned by you
Who this is for
We usually work with four kinds of travel business. Tour operators and destination companies selling their own trips. Travel agencies and online travel brands reselling flights, hotels and packages from suppliers. Umrah, Hajj and group-travel operators who manage visas, documents and group schedules as much as bookings. Activity and experience marketplaces with many small local suppliers.
This page sits below our hospitality app development page, which covers the sector rules. If your product is rooms only, our hotel booking app development page goes deeper on PMS sync and rate plans. Marketplace mechanics such as supplier onboarding and payouts are covered on multi-vendor marketplace app development. All app types are on our solutions list.
If you do not yet have supplier contracts or API access, start there. Building the app first and finding inventory later is the most expensive order to do things in.
Decide before design
- Own inventory, resold inventory, or both
- Which suppliers and APIs, with sandbox access
- Instant confirmation or on-request bookings
- Who handles changes and refunds
- Markets, currencies and languages at launch
The apps in a travel booking product
Traveller app
Search, trip and package pages, booking and payment, traveller details and documents, my trips with offline access, alerts, support chat and reviews.
Operations console
Bookings, supplier confirmations, manual bookings for phone sales, group manifests, change and refund handling, and margin reports.
Supplier or guide portal
For marketplaces and tour operators: availability, departures, check-in lists and payouts, built by our admin panel and dashboard development team.
Core features of a travel booking app
| Feature | What it includes | Detail teams forget |
|---|---|---|
| Search | Destination, dates, travellers, filters, sort by price or duration | Supplier search calls are slow and metered; cache sensibly and show progress |
| Trip and package pages | Itinerary by day, inclusions, photos, map, departure dates | Inclusions and exclusions must come from data, not free text, or they drift |
| Booking | Traveller details, extras, price re-check, payment, confirmation | Handle “price changed” and “no longer available” as normal states, not errors |
| Payments | Card, wallets, deposits and balance due dates, multi-currency | Charge in the currency shown, or explain conversion before payment |
| My trips | Vouchers, tickets, itinerary, documents, offline access | Travellers open this in airports and on roaming data, so it must work offline |
| Changes and cancellations | Self-service where suppliers allow, request-based otherwise | Each supplier has its own rules; the app reads them per booking |
| Alerts and support | Departure reminders, schedule changes, chat with agents | Ask for push permission after booking, when the value is obvious |
Advanced features that drive cost
- Each additional supplier API. Every flight, hotel or activity supplier has its own search, booking, cancellation and error model. Integration and certification per supplier is often the biggest line item after the core app.
- Dynamic packaging. Combining flights, hotels and transfers into one price needs a pricing engine, margin rules and rollback logic when one component fails.
- Group and pilgrimage travel. Group manifests, room sharing, visa document collection and schedules pushed to every traveller in the group.
- Trip planner and AI suggestions. Drag-and-drop itineraries, maps and AI-generated suggestions. Apple Guideline 5.1.2(i) requires disclosure and permission before sharing personal data with third-party AI. See our AI app development service.
- Offline maps and guides. Downloadable city guides and maps for travellers without data, which adds storage and update logic.
- Multi-language and right-to-left. Arabic and Urdu layouts for GCC and pilgrimage markets, plus translated supplier content.

Recommended stack for travel app development
For most travel app development we recommend a cross-platform build with Flutter app development or React Native. Search results, trip pages and checkout are identical across platforms, and travellers expect the same booking on both. Native features such as wallet passes, widgets and Live Activities for departure times can be added through platform modules.
The backend does the real work. A supplier adapter layer gives every supplier the same internal interface, so the app never talks to a supplier directly. We usually build it in Node.js on PostgreSQL, with a search cache, a booking state machine (pending, confirmed, failed, cancelled) and background jobs that poll suppliers for changes. Hosting on AWS or Google Cloud is common. Offline trips use a local database on the device, covered on our mobile databases page.
Integrations travel apps depend on
Supplier and content APIs
Flight, hotel, activity and transfer suppliers or aggregators, each with its own contract, sandbox and certification. We confirm access in discovery.
Payments and currency
Card, wallet and local methods through a provider SDK, deposits and scheduled balance charges, and currency conversion. See payment gateway integration.
Maps and location
Maps for trip pages and meeting points, directions and nearby suggestions through Google Maps and location services.
Messaging and documents
Push alerts, email and WhatsApp updates, and secure upload of passport and visa documents with retention rules.
Store-policy and compliance notes
General information, not legal advice. Travel licensing, consumer-protection and package-travel rules vary by country; confirm them with your lawyer.
Payments. Flights, tours and transfers are services consumed outside the app, so Apple Guideline 3.1.3(e) requires payment methods other than in-app purchase, per Apple’s App Review Guidelines. Google Play billing must not be used for physical services such as transport. Card checkout goes through your payment provider, and UK and EU cards need strong customer authentication.
Accessibility. The European Accessibility Act has applied since 28 June 2025, and its covered services include transport, with websites, apps and e-ticketing named. If you sell transport to EU consumers, we design to WCAG 2.2 from the start.
Traveller data. Passport numbers, dates of birth and travel history are personal data under UK GDPR, EU GDPR, the UAE PDPL and Saudi Arabia’s PDPL, which has been in force since September 2023. Collect only what suppliers require, encrypt documents and delete them on a schedule.
Minimum functionality. A thin wrapper around a booking website risks rejection under Apple Guideline 4.2. Offline trips, alerts and wallet passes give the app a reason to exist.
Compliance baseline in every build
- Card checkout via provider SDK
- Final price confirmed before payment
- Accessible search and booking (WCAG 2.2)
- Encrypted traveller documents with retention rules
- In-app account deletion (Apple 5.1.1(v))
- Supplier terms shown at booking
Typical effort estimate (hours) by version
Typical effort estimates (hours), not quotes, for one Flutter traveller app, a booking backend with a supplier adapter layer, an operations console, QA and project management. Rows are cumulative. Each extra supplier adds hours on top.
| Version | Typical scope | Typical effort estimate (hours) | At the $25–$49/hr market band |
|---|---|---|---|
| MVP (own tours or one supplier) | Search, trip pages, booking and card payment, my trips offline, push alerts, operations console, one supplier or own inventory | 900 to 1,400 | $22,500 to $68,600 |
| v1 (resale and groups) | Two to three supplier APIs, deposits and balance payments, group bookings and documents, multi-currency, support chat, reviews | 1,800 to 2,800 | $45,000 to $137,200 |
| Scale (online travel platform) | Dynamic packaging, more suppliers, supplier portal and payouts, trip planner, multi-language and RTL, load testing | 3,200 to 5,000+ | $80,000 to $245,000+ |
Dollar figures multiply the hours by the $25–$49/hr band most firms list on the Clutch Pakistan app developer directory. That is market data for illustration, not our pricing. Supplier access fees and per-search charges are extra. The MVP sits near the 800 to 1,200-hour booking band on our app development cost guide.
How travel apps make money
Margin and commission
Markup on resold inventory, or commission from suppliers on each confirmed booking.
Own-trip revenue
Tour operators keep the full price on their own departures and use the app to cut agent and payment-handling costs.
Ancillaries
Insurance, transfers, upgrades, SIM cards and activities sold before and during the trip.
Service fees
A clear booking or change fee, shown before payment. Hidden fees cause reviews and chargebacks.
How we build your travel app
NDA and discovery (1–2 weeks)
Inventory sources, supplier APIs, booking states, payment and refund rules. Output: flows, a clickable prototype, an integration plan and a fixed price.
Supplier adapter and booking states first
The first sprints connect one supplier end to end in its sandbox, including failures, before the app’s design is polished.
Two-week sprints with demo builds
TestFlight and Play internal testing builds every sprint, with test bookings your operations team can confirm, change and cancel.
Soft launch and season planning
Launch on one market or product line, then scale before peak season. See how our mobile app development process runs week to week.
Travel app development FAQs
Can a travel app take payments through Apple or Google billing?
No. Flights, tours, hotels and transfers are services consumed outside the app, so Apple Guideline 3.1.3(e) requires other payment methods such as Apple Pay or card entry, and Google Play billing must not be used for physical services. You pay your payment provider’s fees, not a store commission, on bookings.
Which supplier APIs can you integrate?
We integrate the suppliers you have contracts with, whether flight aggregators, hotel bed banks, activity platforms or your own reservation system. Access, sandbox and certification depend on each supplier, so we confirm them in discovery. We build an adapter layer so adding or replacing a supplier later does not mean changing the app.
How do you handle prices that change during checkout?
We re-check price and availability with the supplier just before payment. If the price changed or the item sold out, the traveller sees a clear message and options, not an error. The booking only shows as confirmed after the supplier confirms it, and failed confirmations trigger an automatic refund or an agent task.
How much does travel app development cost?
As a typical effort estimate, an MVP selling your own tours or one supplier’s inventory runs about 900 to 1,400 hours. At the $25–$49 per hour band most firms list on Clutch’s Pakistan directory, that is roughly $22,500 to $68,600. Every extra supplier, packaging logic and group travel features add hours.
Can you build an Umrah or group travel app?
Yes. Group travel apps add manifests, room sharing, document collection for visas, group schedules and announcements pushed to every traveller, often in Arabic and Urdu as well as English. We build those workflows into the operations console so your team manages the group from one place.
Will the app work without internet while travelling?
The trip section should. We store confirmations, vouchers, itineraries and key documents on the device so travellers can open them on a plane or abroad without roaming. Search and booking still need a connection, and the app syncs changes when it reconnects.
