Types of mobile apps we build, grouped by how they work

These are the types of mobile apps we build for founders and product teams in the USA, UK, UAE, Europe and Australia. Most of them are not one app. A taxi product is a rider app, a driver app and a dispatch panel. A food delivery product adds a restaurant app. A telemedicine product carries health-data rules that change how the backend is hosted. Each page below explains the apps in the suite, the features that drive effort, and the store and legal rules that apply.

Why we organise solutions by app type

Buyers rarely search for “a mobile app”. They search for an app like Uber, a grocery app, or a clinic booking app, because the business model decides almost everything: how many apps you need, who pays whom, which payment rules apply and what the admin team does all day.

App type also decides where the risk sits. In a ride-hailing product the hard part is live location and dispatch. In a marketplace it is vendor payouts and disputes. In a health app it is where patient data is stored and who signs the agreement covering it. Grouping our work this way lets each page get specific instead of repeating generic feature lists.

If you are comparing sectors rather than app types, our industry pages cover the compliance and integration picture for healthcare, fintech, retail, food, logistics, education and real estate, plus sectors such as hospitality app development and insurance app development. For budgets, start with the app development cost guide.

The 29 types of mobile apps we build

Each type has its own page covering the apps in the suite, the features that drive effort and the rules that apply.

Commerce and marketplaces

Catalogue, cart, checkout and payouts, with store rules that forbid in-app purchase for physical goods.

Health and fitness

Sensitive data, consent flows and, for clinical products, HIPAA or UK GDPR special category rules.

Fintech and payments

Ledgers, strong customer authentication and regulated partners. The app is the easy part.

Learning, property and travel

Content-heavy apps with search, bookings and subscriptions.

Social, dating and media

User-generated content, moderation tooling and streaming infrastructure.

Bookings and field operations

Calendars, staff schedules, work orders and offline-first technician tools.

Faith and lifestyle

Location-aware utilities with accurate calculations and right-to-left text.

What every solution shares

Different app types, same underlying pieces. Almost every product on this page needs an authentication layer, an API, an admin panel, push notifications, analytics and crash reporting. We build those on a mobile app backend you own, usually Node.js or Laravel with PostgreSQL, or Firebase when real-time sync and speed to MVP matter more than query flexibility.

The admin panel deserves more attention than it usually gets. Operations staff live in it: approving drivers or vendors, refunding orders, editing menus, handling complaints. A weak panel turns every support ticket into a developer request. We scope it as a product in its own right through our admin panel and dashboard development work.

On the client side, most multi-app suites suit Flutter app development, because three apps sharing design components and business logic is where one codebase pays off most. We recommend native Swift or Kotlin when an app leans hard on background location, health sensors or platform features that ship first in native SDKs.

Which solution page fits your idea?

Use this to find the closest starting point. Many products combine two models, and that is fine; the costs add up from the parts.

If your product… Start with Main risk to plan for
Moves a person from A to B with a vetted driver Taxi booking Dispatch accuracy, driver supply, local licensing
Delivers cooked meals from one or many kitchens Food delivery Prep-time estimates and rider assignment
Delivers groceries or retail stock in time slots Grocery delivery Inventory accuracy and substitutions
Sells your own products online E-commerce Catalogue sync and checkout conversion
Lets many sellers list and sell to buyers Marketplace Split payouts, disputes, seller quality
Connects patients with clinicians by video Telemedicine Health-data law and hosting agreements
Books a professional to visit a home Home services Scheduling, pricing quotes, trust and safety
Holds or moves money for users E-wallet Licensed partners and fraud controls

Not sure which model fits? Our mobile app consulting sessions are built for exactly that question.

Pick your platforms, screens, features, backend and design depth in the cost calculator. It gives a typical effort range you can bring to discovery.

Clone apps versus your own product

Many enquiries start with “an Uber clone” or “a Talabat clone”. That is a useful shorthand for scope, and a poor plan for launch. Apple’s guideline 4.3(b) rejects apps that are “indistinguishable from what’s already widely available”, and guideline 4.1(c) bars using another developer’s brand or product name in your icon or app name without approval (App Review Guidelines).

We use reference apps to agree scope quickly, then design your own flows, brand and differentiators. Cost write-ups such as the cost to build an app like Uber follow the same logic: the reference sets the feature list, your market sets the rest.

What changes per app type

  • Number of apps in the suite
  • Who collects payment and who gets paid
  • Real-time needs (location, chat, video)
  • Data rules (health, payments, children)
  • Store payment rules for what you sell

Questions about the types of apps we build

Do you build white-label or ready-made clone scripts?

No. We build custom apps on standard frameworks and well-maintained libraries for authentication, payments and admin tooling. Ready-made scripts look cheap but tend to fail on code quality, upgrades and store review, because Apple rejects near-identical apps under guideline 4.3(b). You get your own codebase in your own repository, owned outright.

My app type is not listed. Can you still build it?

Usually, yes. Most products combine patterns that are on this page: bookings, payments, real-time location, content or chat. Send a short description through the quote form and we reply within one business day with questions, the closest reference solution and whether discovery makes sense.

How long does a typical app suite take?

Discovery takes one to two weeks of workshops. An MVP then usually takes 8 to 16 weeks, depending on how many apps are in the suite and how much of the admin panel launches on day one. We work in two-week sprints and you get a test build on TestFlight or Play internal testing at the end of each.

Can one codebase cover the customer, driver and admin apps?

The customer and provider apps can share one Flutter or React Native codebase with role-based screens, though two separate store listings are usually cleaner for reviews and permissions. The admin panel is a web app. All three talk to the same backend API, so business rules live in one place.

How do I compare costs across app types?

Compare the number of apps and the hard features, not the category name. Real-time tracking, video, split payouts and offline sync each add significant effort. Our cost guides break this down by type, and the calculator turns your choices into a typical effort range before you talk to anyone.
